National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Issues its 2007 Pedestrian Statistics

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has released its annual statistics on pedestrian fatalities and injuries in the United States.

According NHTSA, on average, a pedestrian is killed in a traffic crash every 113 minutes and injured in a traffic crash every 8 minutes.

In 2007, 4,654 pedestrians were killed and 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. Most pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas (73%), at non-intersection locations (77%), in normal weather conditions (90%), and at night (67%).

Alcohol involvement-either for the driver or for the pedestrian-was reported in 49 percent of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian fatalities.

Children and the elderly are the most common victims of pedestrian-motor vehicle accidents. The fatality rate for pedestrians 70+ was also higher than any other age group-2.66 per 100,000 population.
